KARIMUN – In the tranquil land of Bumi Berazam, surrounded by sea and wind at the western edge of the Riau Archipelago, the Wakaf Mata Hati West Kundur Institute, established in 2010, has grown into an integral part of the Karimun community.
The waqf-based institution began by providing religious education and dormitory facilities, and has since expanded to develop productive business units while nurturing and educating orphans and underprivileged children.
“Wakaf Mata Hati is building a civilization that upholds the noble values of Islam, enabling the younger generation to face the challenges of life in today’s digital and modern era,” said KH. Muhammad Abdan Syakuro, S.Ag., Manager of Wakaf Mata Hati West Kundur Institute, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands.
Muhammad Abdan Syakuro, who also serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of West Kundur Subdistrict, explained that the institution runs various regular programs in its dormitory.
These include Tahfidz Al-Qur’an (Qur’an memorization), daily bilingual communication (Arabic–English), calligraphy classes, martial arts (silat), Qur’anic recitation training, hadroh (Islamic musical art),
English public speaking training, and sewing courses for female students (santriwati).
“All educational activities in the Wakaf Mata Hati dormitory aim to nurture and produce resilient, broad-minded future leaders who are ready to serve society and overcome life’s various challenges,” he added.
Karimun’s society reflects a blend of traditional Malay wisdom harmonized with modernization as part of a free trade zone, and is home to diverse ethnic communities. Malays as the indigenous people live alongside Chinese, Bugis, Minang, and other groups.
In this context, Wakaf Mata Hati strives to emerge as an influential and respected icon of educational institutions.
“In response to the times, Wakaf Mata Hati has transformed into an independent educational institution capable of sustaining itself, particularly in supporting mustahik (eligible beneficiaries), orphans, and the underprivileged. We are ready to compete and take a leading role in contributing to the lives of the Karimun community, both nationally and internationally,” he concluded.
